Guidelines

All sound pictures presented here are in short format, with duration of between 20 seconds and three minutes.

They can be presented in various forms: pure audio, audio garnished with photos or audios garnished with video. Some have written text messages, some have spoken words, some are composed and highly polished audio works done with professional recording gear, and others are cuts of raw recordings recorded on mobile phones, as they are, showing what was happening in a particular place and time. We encourage you to play with sound. The primary focus here is on audio and some may find the visuals distracting.  If so, then shut your eyes. We want to explore a broad spectrum of expression.

Each sound picture is conceived as a sonic postcard, where the picture is drawn with a microphone. We call them sonic postcards because each is a captured moment from a given place and time. Like the usual postcard, there is space for a personal message, a written or spoken text.

Each postcard  is a personal expression from the sender, saying:    “I want you to listen to exactly this…… (place, voice, object, action) because for me it tells something about Danish culture and society.”  The sounds must all be recorded in Denmark, but the sound source does not have to be unique to Denmark. Birds migrate, beer is imported, cars are ubiquitous. There is, however, one unique and defining aspect of Danishness: the Danish language, with its complex sounds and extra letters: æ, ø and å. There is nothing quite like it.

Unfortunately, we didn´t have the resources to do a Danish version of this site. Hopefully it will come soon. We chose to start in English. Mostly because we want to make Danish audio culture accessible to others outside of Scandinavia, and also because English is our second language and the material here can be used in our English classes. Eventually, when we have the technique, you will be able to hear the spoken Danish with English subtitles.

Everything is free of charge, but we ask you to register here.
