Background

I grew up in”Radio Days” before television listening every day after school to The Lone Ranger, Tonto and Silver, Sergeant Preston of the North West Mounted Police and his wonder dog, King and in the evening with the lights out, The Green Hornet and The Fat Man.

Audio storytelling enchanted me, the way sounds and narration could evoke vivid pictures in my mind´s eye. They way it etches its way in your brain. I was inspired; I wanted to produce such sound pictures. Fortunately, when I immigrated to Denmark in 1961, I became the protégé  of the founder of the Feature Department at Denmark´s Radio, Willy Reunert. We were both immigrants, he, an Austrian social democrat student living in Berlin in 1938, had fled the Gestapo. I had expatriated from New York, in 1961, seeking the good life in this “welfare state”, with health care for all, good schools, free  collage education, national public broadcasting, all the good things we get for our tax money.

We both had to learn the Danish language and had our foreign accents. We both we interpreters of Danish audio culture, worked with the acoustical dimension in storytelling. I have been privileged in being able to carry on his work with audio picture painting, until retirement in 2002.
